Club Meeting 13 October 2016 (Set Subject Competition – Transport)

This week we had the first of our three set subject competitions, judged by George Todd, one of last year’s set subject winners. 66 images were submitted on the theme of “transport”. There were images of cars, trains, aircraft, buses, trams, ships, bicycles and a balloon, but perhaps the most unusual was Edward Robertson’s image of a sundial (“Time Clock”) on the theme of time travel. George had studied the SPF recommendations for judges and provided some fair and very useful feedback. Many members had captured good images of difficult moving subjects, but distractions in the background, the transport subject not being sufficiently prominent or a lack of sharpness affected some images.

The top scoring images were

  • The Flying Scotsman (Mike Clark) – 20 points
  • Hanging On! (Jennifer Davidson) – 18 points
  • First Bus (Joe Fowler) – 17 points
  • Limo for Hire (Joe Fowler) – 17 points
  • Prized Possession (Jane Renton) – 17 points
  • Fire Plane (Steve Williams) – 17 points

In the end, only one point separated the top scorers, who were:

  • 5th = place (47 points)
    • Steven Beard
    • Steve Williams
  • 4th place (48 points)
    • Jane Renton
  • 3rd place (49 points)
    • Jennifer Davidson
  • 2nd place (50 points)
    • Joe Fowler
  • 1st place (51 points)
    • Mike Clark

Mike wins the privilege of judging next year’s competition. The scores will be carried forward to the next set subject competition (themed “wildlife”) on 9th February 2017.
