Have a great summer of photography!

SPF Ins & Club Outings

Following on from the AGM when a number of questions were raised with regard to Insurance coverage under  the SPF policy. The document below is from the SPF, as can be seen if you are intending on organising a group trip on behalf of the club outwith the club listings on the syllabus then either SPF General Secretary or the SPF Treasurer  should be emailed.

Initially it was proposed for the Club Secretary or Chairman to notify the SPF, however in light of the procedure now clarified I see no reason why the onus should not now rest with the members organising the trip/outing.

The SPF can be contacted as follows, which will open a message box:

SPF General Secretary:

60th Jubilee of Fisherrow Sailing Club

The club has received the following email from Inez Visser of Fisherrow Sailing Club. If you are interesting in videoing  a boat crane in Fisherrow Harbour on Friday 28th April, please email Max Blinkhorn (maxblinkhorn@hotmail.com) or David Banks (davidjamesbanks@gmail.com). MCC members are also invited to a reception at Musselburgh town hall on 15th June 2017. For more information, please email Inez at inez@inez.demon.co.uk. Here is the full message:

This year 2017 is the 60th Jubilee of Fisherrow Sailing Club and we have planned a series of events over and above our normal sailing programme.  We would be delighted to get your members ‘on board’ too.  I am sorry this first request is very short notice, but we would be grateful if one of your members could video the boat crane in at the harbour on Friday 28th April.   I cannot coordinate this first request personally as I will be away next week, but if you contact Max Blinkhorn or David Banks, they should give you the finer details.    Max will be at our club rooms in 97 New Street Fisherrow for a new members open afternoon from 3pm this Sunday 22nd.

A video is planned for show at our exhibition in the Musselburgh Museum from June 15th  to 29th July and Max thought it would be good to include the crane in along with some old footage.  Then our commodore Mark came out with the idea of using a drone to fly with camera over the harbour come up close Mark and then Mark would be recorded making a welcome.  I hope your club is not inundated with such requests.Baring teeth smile emoticon

On the evening of June 15th, 6 for 6.30 we are hosting a reception in the Musselburgh Town Hall, we do not plan to push the boat out, but we are going to attempt to push in two boats of contrasting vintages. There should be some comedy of errors footage / stills potential in that, but more importantly we would be delighted to invite any of your members to come along with our without cameras,  to celebrate with us as part of the Musselburgh Community.

The exhibition will move  to the Brunton for the August Fringe,  I am also negotiating for space at the John Gray centre, but the space is extremely limited. Over and above the Musselburgh Yarn Bombers who use our premises have just been requested to undertake some pieces which celebrate our jubilee.

I look forward to hearing from you and hopefully meeting you in person soon.

All the very best,

Inez Visser, FUCJ coordinator

Outdoor Photoshoot This Thursday, 13th April

A reminder that we will not be meeting in the Fisherrow Centre this Thursday, 13th April 2017. Instead, we will be meeting up for an outdoor photoshoot. I suggest we meet at 7pm outside the Harbour Cafe at Fisherrow Harbour (behind the Shell Garage), as shown on the following map. Unfortunately, the cafe will be closed by 7pm, but the Ravelston House Hotel is around the corner if you arrive early and need refreshment. There is car parking in front of the harbour and along the road next to the promenade,

The sun sets at 8:15pm tomorrow, and it is forecast to be cloudy but not raining. We should have some good light at the start, but bring a tripod if you’d like to continue after sunset or try some long exposure shots of the sea. High tide is at 4:30pm and low tide at 10:45pm, so the tide will be fairly low and going out. There are boats and birds to photograph in the harbour, views of Musselburgh and the Forth, and there may also be interesting debris on the beach.

I hope to see you there.

Borders Digital Challenge Images

For those of you who haven’t heard yet, Musselburgh Camera Club achieved a third place in the Borders Digital Challenge competition last weekend; just one mark below Dumfries Camera Club and three marks below the winners, Morpeth Camera Club. A excellent result considering the strength of some of the competition.

We have obtained a CD of the competition, therefore on Thursday 6th April we will show all the images entered.

Photographers Needed at the Brunton Theatre in Musselburgh

I just received the following message from Kit Millar, the press seceretary at the Brunton Theatre. Would any club members be interested in photographing their dress rehearsal on Tuesday, 4th April. If so, please contact her at kitkirstymillar@gmail.com.

I was given your details by Jane Renton who is in the camera club but also in MAMA.  I am the press officer for MAMA this year.

We are performing Spamalot at the Brunton Theatre in Musselburgh from 5-8 April. We have a dress rehearsal on Tuesday 4th April and we’re wondering if a member of your club would like to come along to the dress to take some photos for us.

I’d be grateful if you could let me know if there is anyone who would be wanting to come along and do some photos. I would get them printed out on the Wednesday and then would make sure they were displayed in the foyer of the Brunton and also credit them if they were used in any reviews of the show or on our social media.

Thanks,

Kit

The club held a six point lead after the first round which consisted of printed images and the lead was consolidated in the second round which was Digital Images, congratulations to all concerned.

Laurie Campbell Nature Workshops

The following has been received from Laurie Campbell regarding workshops he will be running if members are interested they are advised to make their own arrangements….

NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP DAYS WITH LAURIE CAMPBELL IN
ASSOCIATION WITH THE SCOTTISH ORNITHOLOGISTS’ CLUB
WEEKENDS OF 1st / 2nd APRIL and the 6th / 7th May 2017.

Overview:

This one day nature photography workshop is designed to show participants how to get the most from whatever photographic equipment they happen to own. Throughout the day, emphasis will be given on the basics of exposure and composition together with help in seeing potential for creative photography in the wide range of natural history and landscapes subjects we may encounter. With a maximum of six places available, Laurie will be able to spend time on a one to one basis with each group member, identifying specific areas where help is needed in order to offer a bespoke service.

The Tutor:

With over thirty years experience, Laurie was Scotland’s first freelance professional nature photographer. He first taught photography in 1978 while undertaking a four-year degree course in the subject at Napier University in Edinburgh. As the winner of many awards, author of several books, his imagery is published worldwide so we are confident of offering quality tuition, whatever your level of expertise. Being local to, and familiar with the area, Laurie is also well placed to find and identify a range of natural history subjects that we will have access to photograph on the day.

Directions:

The workshop days will be run at beautiful Waterston House which is the headquarters of the Scottish Ornithologists’ Club in the East Lothian village of Aberlady. For Sat Nav users, the post code is EH32 OPY otherwise if you are travelling east from Edinburgh on the A198 coast road, the building is clearly signposted and set back a little way from the road on the first turning to the left just as you enter the village.

Timing:

The workshop will commence at 10.00 am where tea and coffee will be served whilst Laurie gives a brief introduction to the day and shows examples of the type of subject we may expect to photograph. This will also be the perfect opportunity to learn how to set up camera menus and discuss any other technical points.

Although the workshop will end at 5.00pm, if the weather is fine and the sunset is good there will be the option to stay a little longer!

Location and Content:

The layout of the programme will be decided two days in advance and according to weather conditions. After the indoor briefing, the day will start with a visit to the wildlife garden at Waterston House where there will be the opportunity to practice photographing close-up subjects and birds and to run through camera settings before heading further afield.

After lunch indoors, and weather permitting, we will drive the short distance to Aberlady Bay Local Nature Reserve to look for birds, mammals, close-ups of plants and landscape subjects. If the weather is unsettled then we shall walk the short distance to Gosford Park woods to look for birds, mammals and close-up details in nature. There is also a large ornamental lake in the park containing waterfowl, a heronry and occasionally kingfishers and good evidence of otters and badgers.

Throughout the day, guidance will be given on recognising the field signs of birds and particularly mammals, together with the fieldcraft skills required to approach them without causing any disturbance. Where appropriate, a demonstration will be given to show how to site and introduce an improvised hide using any available natural materials and camouflage. For those who want to learn more, then a full demonstration on a wider variety of propriety hides and materials that Laurie uses will be given back at the car park and towards the close of the workshop day.

What to bring:

There is no need for masses of equipment and we suggest that you only bring what you feel comfortable carrying for the whole day. We won’t be covering great distances and the pace throughout the day will be deliberately slow to ensure that we have time to pause, observe and assess the photographic potential of each interesting subject we encounter.

Apart from a Mirror-less, Bridge or Digital SLR (or film SLR) the following items would be useful (although not essential) are as follows:

Camera Instruction Manual.

Tripod and any means of triggering your camera remotely, such as a cable release.

Any close-up equipment, such as a macro lens, extension tubes or close-up filters.

A single long lens in the 300mm range or longer for photographing birds and any mammals.

Wide angle lens.

A polarising filter and any graduated neutral density graduated filters for landscapes.

Laurie will have a spare tripod, filters, close-up lenses, reflectors available should the need arise.

Do please dress according to the weather forecast and come prepared with waterproof footwear as we may occasionally encounter muddy conditions.

Please also bring a packed lunch. Hot drinks will be provided at the Centre.

Cost & Payment Details:

The price of the workshop is £60.00 and £20.00 deposit is required two weeks in advance to secure a booking. A discount of £5.00 will be given for SOC members.
