A Happy New Year to all Musselburgh Camera Club members!

Our first meeting of the new year takes place this coming Thursday, 6th January at the usual time of 7:30pm in the Fisherrow Centre (and by Zoom). Malcolm Roberts will be judging the first of our set subject competitions on the theme of “reflections”.

Don’t forget this Thursday is also the submission date for our human portrait print competition, which this time will be a proper print competition. If you are coming to Fisherrow this Thursday, please bring your mounted prints with you. If you are planning to join by Zoom, please contact George and arrange a mutually convenient hand-over. Please also send George JPEG copies of the images you are entering. The competition will be judged by Gordon Scott on 27th January 2022. It has been a long time since we had a full competition with mounted prints, so this will be a chance to get back into practice.

Change of Programme for 13th January 2022 & Human Portrait Competition

Sadly, we have had to cancel the “Match an Image” competition scheduled for 13th January 2022. After taking suggestions from members this week, we have decided to make 13th January a themed members’ evening. Everyone is encouraged to take some Christmas-themed photographs during the festive season and send up to 3 JPEGs to George Todd. George will shuffle them and show them on 13th January for comments and feedback. The event will be similar to our socially-distanced photoshoot roundup last year.

George is going to contact Gordon Scott and suggest that we make the “Human Portrait Print” competition a true print competition this year. This will give members a chance to practice and get feedback on their printing and mounting skills. You can either bring your prints to the Fisherrow Centre on 6th January or can arrange with George to hand them over at a convenient location. Don’t forget to send George 3 JPEGs as well.

Digital Projected Images Competition – Submission date coming up

A reminder that the submission date for the Digital Projected Images competition is this coming Thursday, 16th September 2021. This is an open competition, so you can send colour images of any subject. If you would like to enter, please send 3 JPEG images to George Todd (georgetodd1957@me.com) by this Thursday.

Please resize your images to no larger than 1600 pixels wide and 1200 pixels tall.

RHS Photographic Competition 2021

Sandra Crowhurst has pointed out that the Royal Horticultural Society’s 2021 photography competition is now open for entries. Click below for details.

Entry is free, so if you have already collected photographs for our “flowers and horticulture” competition you could send them to this competition as well.  You could also browse their galleries for ideas how to improve your images before submitting them. Best of luck!

 

The Final Set Subject Competition – Old Faces

Our third and final set subject competition of the season is open for entries. Please send your 3 JPEG images (sized up to 1600 pixels on the longest side and up to 1200 pixels on the shortest side) on the theme of “Old Faces” to George Todd by this Thursday, 5th March 2020. The competition will be judged on 26th March 2020.

Note that this Thursday’s meeting will be in the same large room at Fisherrow where we had the 3-way competition. We will be having a joint evening with Musselburgh Art Club.

24 October 2019 (Match An Image Competition)

Members will recall that last February we competed with North Berwick Photographic Society in a new competition format called “Match An Image”, in which each team has 30 seconds to match an image displayed by the other team. We did rather badly in that competition because we weren’t used to the format. Click the link below to see what happened last time.

14 February 2019 (Match That Image)

On 24th October 2019 we had a rematch with North Berwick. This time they hosted the competition and entertained us with a delicious collection of cakes and biscuits. The competition was judged by Andy Bennetts. We were better prepared than last time, and this year the competition was a lot closer. By half time the competition was neck and neck at 16 points each. We opened the second half by attempting to repeat our trick of matching an image of a spider with a herd of elephants. This time it didn’t work, and North Berwick took the lead. They stayed ahead until we managed to catch up by matching their image of a group of mushrooms with our image of a cauliflower! Then we won three consecutive rounds with images of a canoeist, a showjumper and a light house, and we moved ahead. The rounds became more chaotic as we tried to match their images with fewer to choose from. At the end of the competition we played our last image – Jim Tod’s “Church Of The Santissimo Redentore”. Astonishingly, they managed to match it with their final image of a building the same shape. But their final match didn’t help much. In the end, Musselburgh won the competition by 32 points to 27.
