SPF Ins & Club Outings

Following on from the AGM when a number of questions were raised with regard to Insurance coverage under  the SPF policy. The document below is from the SPF, as can be seen if you are intending on organising a group trip on behalf of the club outwith the club listings on the syllabus then either SPF General Secretary or the SPF Treasurer  should be emailed.

Initially it was proposed for the Club Secretary or Chairman to notify the SPF, however in light of the procedure now clarified I see no reason why the onus should not now rest with the members organising the trip/outing.

The SPF can be contacted as follows, which will open a message box:

Laurie Campbell Nature Workshops

The following has been received from Laurie Campbell regarding workshops he will be running if members are interested they are advised to make their own arrangements….

NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP DAYS WITH LAURIE CAMPBELL IN
ASSOCIATION WITH THE SCOTTISH ORNITHOLOGISTS’ CLUB
WEEKENDS OF 1st / 2nd APRIL and the 6th / 7th May 2017.

Overview:

This one day nature photography workshop is designed to show participants how to get the most from whatever photographic equipment they happen to own. Throughout the day, emphasis will be given on the basics of exposure and composition together with help in seeing potential for creative photography in the wide range of natural history and landscapes subjects we may encounter. With a maximum of six places available, Laurie will be able to spend time on a one to one basis with each group member, identifying specific areas where help is needed in order to offer a bespoke service.

The Tutor:

With over thirty years experience, Laurie was Scotland’s first freelance professional nature photographer. He first taught photography in 1978 while undertaking a four-year degree course in the subject at Napier University in Edinburgh. As the winner of many awards, author of several books, his imagery is published worldwide so we are confident of offering quality tuition, whatever your level of expertise. Being local to, and familiar with the area, Laurie is also well placed to find and identify a range of natural history subjects that we will have access to photograph on the day.

Directions:

The workshop days will be run at beautiful Waterston House which is the headquarters of the Scottish Ornithologists’ Club in the East Lothian village of Aberlady. For Sat Nav users, the post code is EH32 OPY otherwise if you are travelling east from Edinburgh on the A198 coast road, the building is clearly signposted and set back a little way from the road on the first turning to the left just as you enter the village.

Timing:

The workshop will commence at 10.00 am where tea and coffee will be served whilst Laurie gives a brief introduction to the day and shows examples of the type of subject we may expect to photograph. This will also be the perfect opportunity to learn how to set up camera menus and discuss any other technical points.

Although the workshop will end at 5.00pm, if the weather is fine and the sunset is good there will be the option to stay a little longer!

Location and Content:

The layout of the programme will be decided two days in advance and according to weather conditions. After the indoor briefing, the day will start with a visit to the wildlife garden at Waterston House where there will be the opportunity to practice photographing close-up subjects and birds and to run through camera settings before heading further afield.

After lunch indoors, and weather permitting, we will drive the short distance to Aberlady Bay Local Nature Reserve to look for birds, mammals, close-ups of plants and landscape subjects. If the weather is unsettled then we shall walk the short distance to Gosford Park woods to look for birds, mammals and close-up details in nature. There is also a large ornamental lake in the park containing waterfowl, a heronry and occasionally kingfishers and good evidence of otters and badgers.

Throughout the day, guidance will be given on recognising the field signs of birds and particularly mammals, together with the fieldcraft skills required to approach them without causing any disturbance. Where appropriate, a demonstration will be given to show how to site and introduce an improvised hide using any available natural materials and camouflage. For those who want to learn more, then a full demonstration on a wider variety of propriety hides and materials that Laurie uses will be given back at the car park and towards the close of the workshop day.

What to bring:

There is no need for masses of equipment and we suggest that you only bring what you feel comfortable carrying for the whole day. We won’t be covering great distances and the pace throughout the day will be deliberately slow to ensure that we have time to pause, observe and assess the photographic potential of each interesting subject we encounter.

Apart from a Mirror-less, Bridge or Digital SLR (or film SLR) the following items would be useful (although not essential) are as follows:

Camera Instruction Manual.

Tripod and any means of triggering your camera remotely, such as a cable release.

Any close-up equipment, such as a macro lens, extension tubes or close-up filters.

A single long lens in the 300mm range or longer for photographing birds and any mammals.

Wide angle lens.

A polarising filter and any graduated neutral density graduated filters for landscapes.

Laurie will have a spare tripod, filters, close-up lenses, reflectors available should the need arise.

Do please dress according to the weather forecast and come prepared with waterproof footwear as we may occasionally encounter muddy conditions.

Please also bring a packed lunch. Hot drinks will be provided at the Centre.

Cost & Payment Details:

The price of the workshop is £60.00 and £20.00 deposit is required two weeks in advance to secure a booking. A discount of £5.00 will be given for SOC members.

Epic Scottish Airshow Adventure

Do you know this man??

george smith 2george smith

Yes of course its George Smith Working hard at the Scottish Airshow in Ayr.

In fantastic weather the trip turned into an adventure. Aside from the airshow interest, there were so many static displays that we could not do justice to them in the time we had, in-between fly pasts. It is a fantastic event and one that we will attend again next year. I have not edited my shots yet but here is one i prepared earlier.

Canon Speedlights 600EXRT

The above named speedlights are the latest and greatest in the Canon speedlight range and a little advice to the other Canon users that might save you some cash.

Only purchase if you have a 2012 or later camera.

I bought one of these to add a second light for portrait work and tried using it grouped with my older speedlight, a Canon 430EXII fired by Pixl King radio transmitters. I also have a very old optical slave speedlight which i add into my mix

Canon cameras allow you to control groups of speedlights from the LCD screen when attached via compatible radio transmitters, and I’d been using mine with 2 speedlights for quite a while but with the new 600’s only one speedlight was showing on screen. I could fire off two, but the settings were being mirrored on each flash instead of how i had used my older ones previously, setting the power to each independently.

I had my new flash checked and it was returned with a note saying it worked perfectly. I blamed my old flash, so stupidly went out and bought another 600, but still the same issue.

I had my 5DMKii checked, it too was in good nic and wasn’t the cause.

A check on good old Youtube brought the answer. These new flashes are only fully compatible with newer cameras in radio mode and don’t function properly with 2nd party radio transmitters, only the Canon built STE3 and only on newer bodies.

My dilema was get shot of the new flashes at a loss or upgrade my camera, which i did but it was an expensive lesson.

The flashes have their own inbuilt radio transmission/recievers and with one attached to the cameras hot shoe you can fully operate the 2nd but to get the full benefit you want to add the ST-E3 radio trigger unit which sits in the hot shoe and lets you set each flash output

You can pair ettl with manual etc but you can’t control the zoom remotely, that needs set on each unit manually.

Another negative the trigger doesn’t have any infrared AF assist, which I find quite bizarre. You can have that by making a switch and having one of the flash in the hot shoe but it kind of defeats the point in paying for the trigger, the only way to keep two flashes off camera in low light is to use a torch for helping with AF, set your focus in manual or get a hot shoe cable attachment and connect to the flashes that way.

An expensive lesson, but the flashes are great and grouping is now easy peasy.

MCC members will recall an excellent talk by Neil Scott earlier in the season. Now he’s
advertising the annual Members’ Exhibition of Edinburgh Photographic Society.

“This year we have a bumper exhibition of 191 prints and 189 projected images which will be on display to the public for one day only Sunday March 23 between 11am and 5pm. This year’s exhibition is being judged by Hunter Kennedy, MPAGB ARPS EFIAP from Carluke.  Please come along and see what our members have been up to over the last year!  The prints will be on display in the Main Hall and there will be a loop presentation of the projected images upstairs.”

Camera Poll

This has probably been done before in this website or in other forms at the club, but interested to see what we’re all shooting with. It may be that us Canon users could swap ideas/knowledge about our particular camera types as could those who share the same camera types from other sections.

Photoshop education

Several club members  want to improve  their Photoshop skills. The Adobe TV Channel has very helpful short tutorial videos at  ” tv.adobe.com/channels” .  Select “Photo Editing” then look carefully through the  list of Adobe photo – editing products to  find the one you  use e.g.  Elements 7, CS4, CS5. There are lots of different options for doing the same thing so don’t get stuck trying identify the right way to do it – have fun !
